RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
