Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
